The
diving suit (scafandro) is a large, waterproof and airtight uniform that
covers the whole body apart from the head. The head is covered with a metal
helmet that is fixed on the shoulders of the diver circularly and locks on a
metal plate. In the front there is a small, glass window and the air pipe,
markoutso, links the helmet to an air pump, aerantlia, of the Ťahtarmať, of
the sponge-fishing boat to the round prow. Other equipment that go with the
uniform are the heavy metal shoes, which weigh 4-6kg and the sinkers,
which weigh14-16kg. To dive, the diver holds a skantalopetra (a big, heavy
stone), which is tied up with a rope on him and with the other hand he
removes the sponge. When the diver signalled by pulling the rope, the men on
the boat pulled him up with the skantalopetra.
